Everything you need to know about them:

According to medical statistics, globally only 20% of people can boast having completely healthy teeth. As specialists claim, the situation is even worse here. Many people visit the dentist only at the very last moment when it's already too late to treat a diseased tooth – it needs to be extracted.

The absence of teeth significantly damages appearance.

How to solve this problem? The most modern method of dental prosthetics is implantation.

What does this mean? What are the advantages of implantation compared to other methods?

Let's assume a patient is missing a tooth and wants a prosthesis. If it's done as in ancient times, two adjacent teeth need to be ground down, nerves removed, canals filled, and a bridge made. Thus, the prosthesis relies on ground-down adjacent teeth. In fact, during the procedure, adjacent teeth are simply killed, they die off. It is believed that this leads to them falling out faster afterwards. By restoring one tooth, a person risks losing two more.

Inserting one implant costs more than the procedure of placing a bridge by grinding down adjacent teeth. But here, the patient must decide for themselves which option to choose.

An implant is a kind of titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone. Inside, the implant is hollow and has threading. After the implant "grows in," it fuses with the bone, the inner plug is removed, and instead, an abutment – a head fixed with a screw – is placed. Then a ceramic crown is placed on this head.

The implant placement procedure itself takes about 20 minutes, but placing the abutment and crown can only be done after a certain time (from 2.5 to 6 months).

Dental implants can be used in all types of prosthetics. Overall, these constructions can be divided into two groups: removable and non-removable. A non-removable construction is simple: a ceramic crown is placed on the implant head. However, in this case too, the ceramic crown can be fixed not with glue but with a small screw. Then the construction is fully removable: in case of any problems with the crown, it can be removed by unscrewing the small screw and then removing the head.

Only the implant itself, which has grown into the bone, remains strictly fixed. Typically, every 5-6 years, the entire construction requires minor corrections, which can be easily done if it is fully removable.

A removable construction is more complex: a so-called bar, reinforcement, is fixed on the implant, on which a prosthesis is made.

Removable constructions are usually placed on a completely toothless jaw. If implants with ceramics are made instead of all missing teeth, it will be very expensive.

But you can place 4 implants, install a bar construction on them, and put a removable prosthesis on top – it will be much cheaper. A bar construction is also useful for those who do not want or cannot afford a more expensive non-removable prosthesis immediately.

In such cases, a removable bar construction serves as an intermediate option: after some time, the patient can again go to the surgeon and easily replace the removable prosthesis with non-removable ones.

In short, there are no special medical indications for placing removable prostheses, but financially, it is a more advantageous option.

What is a membrane?

A membrane is something like a patch that is placed under the gum to hide a bone defect or to isolate the material we implanted. For example, implants.

In a normal situation, immediately after implantation, the dentist simply stitches over the gum. But sometimes its volume is insufficient, and then a membrane implantation is needed to create an additional barrier, preventing food residues, bacteria, etc., from entering the surgical site.

There are many types of membranes, but they all fall into two types: absorbable and non-absorbable. The former dissolve after a certain time, while the latter do not.

Absorbable membranes are divided into several categories: some dissolve after several weeks, others after several months. Non-absorbable membranes usually have a fine titanium mesh that gives them shape.

Membrane implantation is not cheap. The membrane itself costs quite a lot, and its implantation requires surgical skill, so not all clinics offer this service.
